Know Before You Go

The Hampta Pass with Chandratal trek is one of the most popular and scenic trekking routes in Himachal Pradesh, connecting the lush green valleys of Kullu with the stark, barren landscapes of Lahaul and Spiti. Located at an altitude of around 14,000 feet, Hampta Pass is a thrilling crossover trek, while Chandratal Lake, often called the "Moon Lake," sits at about 14,100 feet and is famous for its mystical beauty. Choosing the best time to visit this trek is essential for ensuring safety, comfort, and the best possible experience.

The ideal time to trek Hampta Pass and visit Chandratal is from mid-June to late September. During this period, the trails are accessible, the weather is relatively stable, and the natural beauty is at its peak. Snow begins to melt by mid-June, making the paths clear yet still offering patches of snow that add to the adventure. Trekkers during this time can enjoy breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, colorful wildflowers, and vibrant meadows. The lake at Chandratal also becomes accessible once the snow melts, usually from late June onwards, and remains open until early October.

Visiting in June and early July is perfect for trekkers who want to experience both snow and greenery together. The higher reaches of Hampta Pass are often still covered in snow, which gives the trek a more adventurous feel. Daytime temperatures generally range from 10°C to 15°C, while nights can drop close to freezing. The landscape in Kullu Valley looks lush and colorful with blooming flowers, while Spiti Valley offers stark, dramatic views. This contrast is one of the main highlights of the trek.

By August and September, the snow has mostly melted, making trekking conditions easier and safer. This is also considered the best season for photography, as the skies are clear, the rivers flow gently, and the meadows are at their greenest. Chandratal Lake looks spectacular during this time, reflecting the surrounding mountains in its crystal-clear waters. Nights can still be chilly, but the weather is comparatively more stable than in early summer. Trekkers also find this period less crowded compared to June, making it a great time for those who prefer peace and solitude along the trail.

The monsoon months (mid-July to early August) bring challenges for trekkers. While the region of Spiti receives very little rainfall due to its high-altitude desert climate, the Kullu side often experiences heavy showers. This can make the trails slippery, increase the chances of landslides on the way to Manali, and cause unexpected delays. However, the lush green scenery during this season looks exceptionally beautiful for those who are willing to take the risk and travel with caution.

Trekking to Hampta Pass or visiting Chandratal after late September is generally not recommended. With the onset of winter, snowfall begins again in October, and the route becomes inaccessible. Chandratal Lake also closes for visitors by early October, and camping near the lake is strictly prohibited after this period. Harsh weather conditions, freezing temperatures, and blocked trails make trekking risky. For safety reasons, most trekking companies end their operations by the end of September.

Apart from weather considerations, cultural experiences also enhance the trek during this season. Local festivals and fairs in Himachal Pradesh, held between July and September, allow trekkers to witness the traditions and lifestyle of mountain communities. Experiencing this blend of adventure, spirituality, and local culture adds more value to the journey.

In summary, the best time to trek Hampta Pass with Chandratal Lake is between mid-June and late September. These months offer safe trekking conditions, manageable weather, and stunning natural beauty. Whether you are an adventure enthusiast eager to cross snow-covered passes, a photographer seeking breathtaking landscapes, or a traveler wanting to witness the surreal beauty of Chandratal, this period ensures the most rewarding experience. Avoiding harsh winters and unpredictable monsoon showers is key to enjoying this trek fully.

Reaching Hampta Pass and Chandratal Lake, two of the most sought-after trekking and travel destinations in Himachal Pradesh, involves a combination of road journeys and trekking. Located close to Manali, Hampta Pass connects the green valleys of Kullu with the barren high-altitude desert of Spiti, while Chandratal, also known as the Moon Lake, lies at around 14,100 feet and offers unmatched beauty. To make the journey smooth and enjoyable, proper planning is essential, as the route includes both motorable roads and trekking trails.

Most travelers begin their journey from Manali, which serves as the primary hub for the Hampta Pass trek from Manali. Manali is well connected by road to major cities like Delhi (around 550 km away) and Chandigarh (310 km away). Regular HRTC and private Volvo buses, as well as taxis, operate on these routes. The journey takes about 12–14 hours from Delhi and 8–9 hours from Chandigarh. Once in Manali, trekkers can stock up on supplies, rent gear, and meet guides or trekking companies before heading to the base point.

The trek to Hampta Pass usually begins from the small village of Jobra, located around 20 km from Manali. From Manali, a short drive of about 1–2 hours takes you to Jobra through winding mountain roads and pine forests. This road journey sets the tone for the adventure ahead, offering glimpses of waterfalls, apple orchards, and charming Himachali villages. Jobra acts as the starting point for the trek, and most organized trekking groups camp here on the first day.

From Jobra, the trekking trail gradually ascends through thick forests of pine, maple, and silver birch, eventually opening into lush meadows. The first halt is usually at Chika, a beautiful campsite beside a gushing river. Over the next 3–4 days, trekkers move through scenic campsites like Balu ka Ghera and Shea Goru, experiencing dramatic landscapes that shift from the greenery of Kullu Valley to the stark, rugged terrain of Lahaul. The climb to Hampta Pass itself, at around 14,000 feet, is challenging but rewarding, with panoramic views of snow-covered peaks and glaciers. The descent on the other side leads towards Chatru, a remote hamlet in the Lahaul Valley.

After completing the trek, travelers usually extend their journey to Chandratal Lake, one of the most enchanting high-altitude lakes in India. To reach Chandratal, a road trip is required from Chatru or Batal. Shared jeeps and private taxis are available, or trekkers can pre-book vehicles as part of their package. The road from Chatru to Chandratal is rough, narrow, and full of hairpin bends, making it an adventure in itself. This Chandratal Lake road trip offers breathtaking views of the Chandra River, snow-capped peaks, and barren Spitian landscapes.

Once at Chandratal, travelers usually camp near the designated campsite area, which is about 2 km from the lake. Camping right on the lake’s edge is prohibited to preserve its pristine environment, but the campsites nearby offer comfortable tents, meals, and facilities. The shimmering turquoise waters of the lake, reflecting the surrounding mountains, create a surreal atmosphere, especially during sunrise and sunset.

For those who wish to return quickly, there is also an option to take a direct road journey from Manali to Chandratal via Rohtang Pass and Batal. This route, however, is extremely challenging due to rough terrain and frequent water crossings, and is usually recommended for experienced drivers with strong vehicles like SUVs. Most travelers prefer combining it with the Hampta Pass trek for a complete experience.

Accessibility depends heavily on the season. The trek is open from mid-June to late September, when snow has melted enough to allow safe passage. During these months, weather is relatively stable, though nights remain cold. Chandratal Lake is also accessible only during this window, as heavy snowfall blocks the roads for the rest of the year. From October to May, both Hampta Pass and Chandratal remain closed due to snow, making travel impossible.

To summarize, reaching Hampta Pass with Chandratal involves the following steps:

  • Travel to Manali from Delhi, Chandigarh, or other major towns by bus or taxi.
  • Drive from Manali to Jobra (20 km), the base point of the trek.
  • Trek across campsites like Chika, Balu ka Ghera, Shea Goru, and cross Hampta Pass to reach Chatru.
  • From Chatru or Batal, take a road trip to Chandratal Lake (around 45 km).
  • Return via Manali or continue the journey deeper into Spiti Valley.
With this blend of road travel and trekking, the journey to Hampta Pass and Chandratal is both adventurous and rewarding. Whether you choose to trek through forests and meadows or drive across rugged mountain roads, the combination of natural beauty, adventure, and the surreal charm of the lake makes this one of the most unforgettable experiences in the Himalayas.

The ideal duration to explore Hampta Pass along with Chandratal Lake is generally 5 to 6 days. This duration allows trekkers to fully experience the diverse landscapes, high-altitude passes, and the enchanting beauty of the Moon Lake while also adjusting comfortably to the elevation. A carefully planned Hampta Pass trek itinerary ensures that trekkers do not rush the journey, have enough time to acclimatize, and enjoy each campsite to the fullest.

The journey usually begins from Manali, which acts as the starting hub for the trek. On the first day, travelers generally drive from Manali to Jobra, a small village located around 20 km away. This short road trip of about 1–2 hours passes through pine forests and apple orchards, setting the tone for the adventure. From Jobra, the trek to the first campsite at Chika begins. This initial trail is relatively easy, taking 2–3 hours, and introduces trekkers to the scenic beauty of Himachal’s lush valleys.

On the second day, the trek continues from Chika to Balu ka Ghera, a high-altitude meadow surrounded by snow-clad peaks. The journey takes around 6–7 hours, gradually gaining altitude while offering mesmerizing views of waterfalls and streams. Camping here under the starry night sky is an unforgettable experience, making this day one of the highlights of the Hampta Pass trek itinerary.

The third day is the most challenging and rewarding, as trekkers cross the actual Hampta Pass situated at an altitude of about 14,000 feet. The steep ascent and descent require stamina and determination, but the panoramic views of the Kullu and Lahaul valleys make it worthwhile. This is also the day when trekkers witness the drastic change in landscapes — from the green meadows of Kullu to the barren mountains of Lahaul. By evening, most groups descend to Shea Goru for camping beside a glacial stream, enjoying the peaceful and isolated atmosphere.

On the fourth day, trekkers descend from Shea Goru to Chatru, a remote settlement in the Lahaul Valley. The trek takes about 5–6 hours and follows rocky terrain surrounded by rugged mountains. From Chatru, a road journey begins toward Chandratal Lake, which is around 45 km away. Depending on weather and road conditions, travelers may reach the campsite near Chandratal by evening. Spending the night here gives visitors their first taste of the magical Chandratal camping experience.

The fifth day is dedicated to exploring Chandratal Lake, one of the most beautiful high-altitude lakes in India. Trekkers usually hike the 2 km stretch from the campsite to the lake, as vehicles are not allowed right up to the shore. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and wide open meadows, the shimmering turquoise waters of Chandratal create a heavenly atmosphere. Many trekkers spend the day here meditating, photographing, or simply relaxing by the lake. Camping at Chandratal under a sky full of stars is considered one of the most unforgettable experiences of the entire journey.

The sixth and final day marks the return journey. From Chandratal, travelers usually drive back via Chatru and cross the famous Rohtang Pass to reach Manali. This return trip offers another chance to admire the raw beauty of the Himalayas before concluding the adventure.

To summarize, a 5 to 6-day trip is ideal to explore both Hampta Pass and Chandratal Lake. This timeframe gives trekkers ample opportunity to acclimatize, cross diverse terrains, and experience the magic of high-altitude camping. With a well-planned Hampta Pass trek itinerary and the mesmerizing Chandratal camping experience, travelers can enjoy the perfect balance of adventure, natural beauty, and spiritual serenity that makes this Himalayan journey truly unique.

Safety is one of the most important aspects to consider while planning the Hampta Pass with Chandratal trek. Since the journey involves crossing high-altitude passes, camping in remote valleys, and visiting the pristine Chandratal Lake, trekkers must prepare well in advance to ensure a smooth and enjoyable adventure. With proper planning, guidance, and adherence to essential Hampta Pass trek safety measures, even beginners can attempt this trek without major difficulties.

By Road to Starting Point: The trek begins from Manali, one of the most popular tourist hubs of Himachal Pradesh. Well-maintained roads connect Manali with Delhi, Chandigarh, and other towns. Most groups travel by road from Manali to Jobra, the base camp, which is located around 20 kilometers away. This short drive of about 1–2 hours passes through pine forests and apple orchards and is considered safe and scenic. Hiring a reliable taxi or traveling with an organized trekking group adds to the safety and comfort of the journey.

Trekking Route Safety: The actual trek from Jobra takes about 4–5 days to complete, passing through Chika, Balu ka Ghera, Shea Goru, and Chatru before heading toward Chandratal. During the summer trekking season (mid-June to late September), the trail is well-marked and frequently used by trekkers. However, weather conditions can change quickly at high altitudes, so carrying rain gear, warm clothes, and sturdy trekking shoes is essential. Beginners should pace themselves, take regular breaks, and stay hydrated to minimize the risk of altitude-related issues. Having a guide ensures additional Hampta Pass trek safety, as local experts are aware of trail conditions and emergency protocols.

Camping Safety: Each campsite on this trek, including Chika, Balu ka Ghera, and Shea Goru, has wide open spaces suitable for tents. Many organized groups provide camping equipment, meals, and basic medical kits. Camping beside rivers and meadows is a unique Himalayan experience but requires responsible practices. Trekkers are advised to avoid setting camps too close to rivers and to follow eco-friendly practices. Experienced guides generally choose safe camping spots that minimize exposure to landslides or floods.

At Hampta Pass: Crossing the actual Hampta Pass at an altitude of about 14,000 feet is the most challenging part of the trek. The steep ascent and descent require stamina and careful footwork. Weather at the pass can turn unpredictable, with sudden winds or snowfall, even in summer. For beginners, this section may feel tough, but with gradual acclimatization and guidance, it is safe and manageable. Following Chandratal trek precautions such as walking in groups, avoiding overexertion, and carrying high-energy snacks ensures a secure crossing.

Exploring Chandratal Lake: After completing the pass, trekkers descend to Chatru and then proceed toward Chandratal Lake, which lies at an altitude of 4,300 meters. The lake itself is 2 km away from the campsite and must be reached on foot, as vehicles are not allowed near its shore. The trail is safe, but due to the thin air, trekkers should walk slowly and avoid running. Spending limited time near the lake and returning before sunset is recommended for safety. Camping near Chandratal is a highlight of the trek, but trekkers must carry warm clothing as temperatures drop sharply at night.

Precautions and Best Practices: To ensure safety, trekkers should plan their trip during the official trekking season (June to September), when weather conditions are stable. Monsoons may cause slippery trails and landslides, while winters render the route inaccessible due to heavy snowfall. Carrying essentials like a first-aid kit, water-purification tablets, trekking poles, and layered clothing is highly recommended. Beginners should avoid alcohol and smoking, as these can worsen altitude sickness. Respecting local culture and avoiding littering is also important, as Hampta Pass and Chandratal are considered ecologically and culturally sensitive regions.

In conclusion, the Hampta Pass with Chandratal trek is both safe and rewarding if undertaken with proper planning, physical preparation, and guidance. Whether you choose to travel with an organized trekking group or hire a local guide, adhering to Hampta Pass trek safety guidelines and following Chandratal trek precautions ensures a secure and memorable journey. With its mix of adventure, natural beauty, and cultural richness, this trek is an ideal choice for both beginners and experienced trekkers.

The Hampta Pass with Chandratal trek is a thrilling and scenic adventure, but safety and health must always be the top priorities for every trekker. The trail covers diverse terrains ranging from lush forests and green valleys to high-altitude passes and barren landscapes of Lahaul. Due to the challenging conditions, unpredictable weather, and elevation that crosses 14,000 feet, following essential Hampta Pass trek safety tips and health guidelines is crucial. Proper preparation not only ensures a secure journey but also makes the Hampta Pass trek package more enjoyable and memorable.

Acclimatize to High Altitude: One of the most important Chandratal trek health precautions is proper acclimatization. Since the trek takes you above 4,000 meters, altitude sickness is a common risk. Trekkers should spend a day in Manali or Jobra to adapt before heading towards higher camps like Chika or Balu ka Ghera. Climbing gradually, avoiding overexertion, and listening to your body can help reduce symptoms such as headaches, nausea, and dizziness. Carrying medication for altitude sickness after consulting a doctor is also recommended.

Hydration and Nutrition: Staying hydrated is vital while trekking at high altitudes. The dry mountain air often causes dehydration, which can worsen fatigue and altitude-related problems. Carry refillable water bottles and purification tablets since clean water may not always be available on the trail. Light but energy-rich snacks like nuts, protein bars, and dry fruits provide instant energy during steep climbs. Organized Hampta Pass trek packages generally include home-style meals that are nutritious, helping trekkers maintain stamina throughout the journey.

Clothing and Footwear: The Himalayan weather is highly unpredictable. Days may be sunny and warm, while nights near Chandratal Lake can be freezing. Layering is the best strategy—breathable shirts for trekking, thermal wear for evenings, and a waterproof jacket to protect against sudden rain or snow. Gloves, caps, and sunglasses are also necessary. Sturdy trekking shoes with ankle support and a firm grip are essential for safely navigating rocky trails, snow patches, and river crossings. These small steps are some of the most practical Hampta Pass trek safety tips for beginners.

Medical Kit and Health Preparation: Carrying a personal medical kit is non-negotiable. It should include basic first aid items like antiseptic cream, bandages, and painkillers, along with medicines for altitude sickness, motion sickness, and cold. Consulting a doctor before the trek is highly advisable, especially for those with respiratory or cardiac issues. Most professional guides in Hampta Pass trek packages also carry oxygen cylinders and medical supplies for emergencies.

Experienced Guides and Local Support: Trekking with trained guides ensures both safety and convenience. Local guides are familiar with the terrain, river crossings, and unpredictable weather conditions. They assist with navigation, campsite selection, and emergency response. Most Hampta Pass trek packages also include porters and camping staff who handle gear, food, and tents, making the experience safer and more comfortable.

Weather Awareness: The best time for this trek is from mid-June to late September. Attempting it outside these months is risky. Monsoons bring heavy rains, slippery trails, and landslides, while winters make the region inaccessible due to snow. Always check local weather forecasts before beginning the trek and follow your guide’s instructions strictly. Respecting seasonal boundaries is one of the most important Chandratal trek health precautions.

Physical Fitness: Building physical stamina is necessary for this moderately difficult trek. Pre-trek training such as jogging, hiking, yoga, and basic strength exercises for legs and core help prepare the body. Simple routines like squats, planks, and lunges improve balance and endurance, making steep climbs easier and reducing the risk of injury.

Eco-Friendly Practices: Both Hampta Pass and Chandratal Lake are ecologically sensitive zones. Following “leave no trace” principles is essential. Carry reusable bottles, avoid single-use plastics, and dispose of waste responsibly. Since Chandratal is considered sacred, trekkers should respect the site by not littering or disturbing its natural beauty. Responsible trekking ensures that future travelers can also enjoy these pristine landscapes.

In conclusion, the Hampta Pass with Chandratal trek can be both safe and enriching if health and safety guidelines are followed diligently. By acclimatizing properly, staying hydrated, dressing appropriately, carrying a medical kit, and traveling with experienced guides, trekkers can minimize risks and maximize enjoyment. Adopting eco-friendly practices and maintaining fitness further enhance the experience. With the right preparation and adherence to Hampta Pass trek safety tips and Chandratal trek health precautions, this Himalayan journey becomes a once-in-a-lifetime adventure filled with natural wonders and spiritual energy.

Camping at Chandratal Lake:
Direct camping on the banks of Chandratal Lake is not allowed due to environmental regulations, as the area is protected and considered sacred. However, official camping sites are set up about 2–3 km away from the lake, offering easy access while ensuring that the pristine environment of the lake remains undisturbed. Spending a night at Chandratal is often the highlight of the trek, with crystal-clear skies, countless stars, and the reflection of the mountains on the turquoise lake making it a magical experience. Most organized Hampta Pass trek with Chandratal camping packages include a night stay near the lake.

Facilities at the Campsites:
While the trek is an adventure, the campsites are usually well-equipped by professional Hampta Pass trek operators. Facilities typically include comfortable alpine tents, sleeping bags, mats, and freshly cooked meals. Basic toilet tents are provided to maintain hygiene. Some premium packages may also include portable chairs, dining tents, and eco-friendly waste disposal systems to ensure a comfortable and responsible camping experience.

Best Season for Camping:
The best time to camp along the Hampta Pass trek route and near Chandratal Lake is from mid-June to September. During this period, the weather is favorable, meadows are green, and the lake is accessible. Winters and early summers are not recommended, as heavy snowfall makes both camping and trekking unsafe.

Eco-Friendly and Responsible Camping:
Since Chandratal camping and Hampta Pass trails lie in a fragile ecosystem, most reputed operators follow strict eco-friendly practices. Trekkers are advised not to leave behind any waste, avoid single-use plastics, and respect local customs. Camping in designated zones also ensures that the pristine beauty of the Himalayas is preserved for future travelers.

Why Choose Organized Camping Packages:
Booking a reliable Hampta Pass trek package ensures that your camping experience is safe, well-managed, and enjoyable. Professional guides handle the logistics, set up camps, provide meals, and ensure safety at high altitudes. This also allows trekkers to focus on enjoying the views, clicking photographs, and experiencing the serenity of Himalayan nights without worrying about the practicalities.

Additional Camping Highlights:
Apart from Chandratal, the journey offers beautiful camping nights at Balu Ka Ghera and Shea Goru. These campsites provide stargazing opportunities, peaceful riverside locations, and the thrill of sleeping amidst snow-clad peaks. Such experiences make the trek much more than just a hike – they turn it into a soul-stirring Himalayan adventure.

In conclusion, >camping at Chandratal Lake (near the official campsites) and along the Hampta Pass trek route is one of the biggest attractions of this Himalayan journey. Whether you are resting in green meadows, gazing at the stars in a remote valley, or spending a night near the sacred Chandratal, camping brings trekkers closer to nature. With well-organized Hampta Pass trek packages, you can enjoy safe, comfortable, and eco-friendly camping while creating unforgettable memories in the lap of the Himalayas.

The Hampta Pass trek, one of the most popular Himalayan treks in Himachal Pradesh, is famous for its dramatic landscape variations and unpredictable weather conditions. Starting from the lush green Kullu Valley and ending in the arid terrains of Spiti, the trek takes trekkers through constantly changing climates and altitudes. Understanding the Hampta Pass trek weather is crucial for proper planning, safety, and enjoyment of this adventure.

General Weather Conditions:
The Hampta Pass temperature and weather vary significantly depending on the season and altitude. At lower campsites such as Jobra and Jwara, the climate is relatively mild, while higher camps like Balu Ka Ghera, Shea Goru, and Chandratal experience freezing nights even in summer. Trekkers must be prepared for sudden rainfall, chilly winds, and occasional snowfall. Carrying proper layered clothing, waterproof gear, and warm sleeping bags is essential for a comfortable trek.

Summer Weather (June – July):
June marks the beginning of the trekking season. During this time, Hampta Pass weather is generally pleasant, with daytime temperatures ranging between 10°C to 15°C at lower altitudes. Nights can drop to 0°C to 5°C, especially near Shea Goru and Chandratal. The skies remain mostly clear, offering spectacular views of snow-capped peaks. In July, monsoon begins, bringing rain in Kullu Valley and light snow or sleet at higher camps. Trails may become slippery, so waterproof boots and ponchos are highly recommended.

Monsoon Weather (July – August):
This is the trickiest time for the Hampta Pass trek. Kullu side receives heavy rainfall, leading to muddy and slippery trails, while the Spiti side stays relatively dry. Trekkers often encounter mist, lush meadows, and blooming wildflowers during this time, making it one of the most scenic seasons. However, weather is unpredictable, with sudden showers, cold winds, and low visibility. Day temperatures range between 8°C to 13°C, while nights can dip below 0°C. Carrying sturdy trekking poles, quick-dry clothes, and waterproof backpacks ensures safety and comfort.

Post-Monsoon Weather (September – mid-October):
September is considered the best time for Hampta Pass trek. The rains subside, skies clear up, and the landscapes offer the perfect blend of greenery and barren Spiti beauty. Daytime temperatures range from 12°C to 18°C, while nights can go as low as -2°C to 4°C. This is also the best season to camp near Chandratal Lake, where crystal-clear skies offer unmatched stargazing experiences. October marks the onset of winter, with increasing chances of early snowfall and freezing nights. Most trekking routes close by mid-October due to harsh conditions.

Winter Weather (November – May):
The Hampta Pass trail remains closed in winters due to heavy snowfall, blocked passes, and extreme weather conditions. Temperatures can drop to -15°C or lower, making it unsafe for trekking. Only experienced mountaineers with proper expedition gear attempt these routes during winter, but for regular trekkers, the season is completely off-limits.

Weather at Chandratal Lake:
Since most Hampta Pass trek packages include a visit to Chandratal, it’s important to note that weather here is much colder than on the Kullu side. Even in July and August, nights at Chandratal drop below 0°C, and strong winds make camping challenging. Clear nights offer magical views of the Milky Way, but trekkers must carry thermal wear, gloves, and woolen caps to stay warm.

Tips for Trekkers:
1. Always carry rain protection (ponchos, rain covers) during monsoon months.
2. Use layered clothing to adapt to sudden temperature drops.
3. Acclimatize properly at higher altitudes to avoid AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness).
4. Keep buffer days in your itinerary to manage weather-related delays.
5. Trust professional Hampta Pass trek operators for updated weather information.

In conclusion, Hampta Pass trek weather is unpredictable yet beautiful, ranging from pleasant sunny days to cold windy nights and sudden rain showers. While June to September offers the best window to experience this trek, trekkers must always be prepared for rapid changes in temperature and climate. Whether it’s walking through misty meadows, braving chilly winds near the pass, or camping under starry skies at Chandratal, the weather adds both challenges and charm to the Hampta Pass trekking experience. Being well-prepared ensures that trekkers enjoy the adventure safely while soaking in the raw Himalayan beauty.

The Hampta Pass trek is one of the most scenic Himalayan trails, taking you from the lush Kullu Valley into the stark landscapes of Spiti. Along with its natural beauty and adventure, trekkers must also be aware of the permits and permissions required to complete this journey, especially if they plan to camp at Chandratal Lake. Having the right documentation not only ensures a hassle-free trek but also helps maintain the ecological balance of this fragile region.

1. Forest Permit for Hampta Pass:
Every trekker attempting the Hampta Pass trek needs a forest entry permit. Since the route passes through protected forest areas, this permit is mandatory and is issued by the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department. The permit includes a nominal fee that goes towards forest conservation. Most Hampta Pass trek operators include this in their package cost and arrange the documentation in advance, but if trekking independently, you need to obtain it from Manali or designated checkpoints.

2. Camping Permission:
Camping is regulated in certain zones along the trek to preserve the natural environment. At popular campsites such as Jobra, Jwara, Balu Ka Ghera, and Shea Goru, camping permissions are usually covered under the forest permit. However, trekkers must follow eco-friendly guidelines like avoiding littering, minimizing campfires, and respecting local rules. For groups, the trek leader or guide ensures that camping permissions are in place.

3. Special Permission for Chandratal Lake:
Chandratal Lake, located at around 4,300 meters in the Spiti region, is one of the highlights of the Hampta Pass trek. While visiting the lake does not require a separate trekking permit, camping near Chandratal requires special permission. Since Chandratal is considered ecologically sensitive and sacred, direct camping on the lake’s banks is strictly prohibited. Instead, designated campsites have been set up around 2–3 km away from the lake. Chandratal camping permission is generally handled by registered local operators who provide tents, meals, and eco-friendly facilities for trekkers.

4. Environmental and Green Tax:
Trekkers entering Himachal Pradesh, especially around Manali, are often required to pay a green tax or environmental fee. This small amount is used by the local administration for maintaining cleanliness, waste disposal, and eco-conservation. This fee is usually collected at entry checkpoints near Manali and Rohtang Pass. Carrying the receipt is recommended as officials may check it along the way.

5. Identity Proof Requirement:
All trekkers need to carry a valid government-issued identity card such as Aadhaar card, Passport, Driving License, or Voter ID. This ID proof is mandatory when applying for Hampta Pass trek permits and also needs to be shown at forest checkpoints and camping areas.

6. Permissions through Trek Operators:
For most trekkers, the easiest way to handle permits is through professional Hampta Pass tour operators. These operators take care of forest permits, camping permissions, and Chandratal arrangements in advance. This not only saves time but also ensures compliance with local regulations. Solo trekkers may need to coordinate with the Forest Department directly, which can be more time-consuming.

7. Rules and Regulations to Follow:
- Camping directly on the banks of Chandratal Lake is not allowed.
- Always carry your forest permit and identity proof during the trek.
- Follow the “Leave No Trace” policy – carry back your waste and avoid disturbing wildlife.
- Stick to designated campsites provided by trek operators.
- Avoid using plastic bottles and non-biodegradable items in restricted zones.

Tips for Trekkers:
- Always check the latest Hampta Pass trek rules before starting your journey, as regulations may change depending on the season.
- Book your trek with reputed operators who include all required permits for Hampta Pass and Chandratal in their package.
- If trekking independently, keep buffer time for arranging permits in Manali.
- Carry multiple photocopies of your ID card and permit receipts, as they may be needed at different checkpoints.

In conclusion, obtaining the right permits for Hampta Pass trek and Chandratal camping permissions is a vital step for every trekker. Forest permits, green taxes, and regulated camping permissions ensure that the fragile Himalayan ecosystem remains preserved while allowing adventure enthusiasts to experience its beauty responsibly. With the correct documents in hand and by respecting local rules, trekkers can enjoy a smooth, safe, and memorable journey through the enchanting Hampta Pass and the mystical Chandratal Lake.

As the highest Shiva temple in the world, Tungnath is an incredible place to visit, and my recent trip there was made all the more memorable thanks to our amazing tour captain, Zishan.
From the moment we started our trek, Zishan's passion and knowledge were evident. He wasn't just a guide; he was a leader who ensured everyone in our group felt safe, supported, and included. He had an infectious enthusiasm that made even the most challenging parts of the trek feel manageable and fun. He shared fascinating stories about the local culture and the history of the temple, which truly enriched our experience.
What impressed me most about Zishan was his professionalism and care. He was always checking in on everyone, making sure we were hydrated and comfortable, and he was quick to offer a helping hand whenever needed. He was incredibly organised, handling all the logistics seamlessly, and his calm demeanour was reassuring, especially during unexpected changes in the weather.
The beauty of Tungnath is breathtaking, but Zishan's expert guidance is what transformed it into a truly unforgettable journey. If you're planning a trip to Tungnath, I highly recommend finding a way to join a group led by him. He’s an exceptional tour captain, and I can't speak highly enough of his work.

This was literally the best trip of my life , every single arrangement was amazing , the people ,the stays ,the management. Everything was more than expected, I created a lot of memories whether it is enjoying , trekking , dancing , late night games Everything was appreciable and the cherry on the top was our trip captain zeeshan , he handled every situation calmly and helped in every single manner. He is a very sensible and a friendly person I never felt that he was a stranger to me. From being strangers to friends the experience was adorable. I would suggest everyone to at least plan once with them.

This was my first experience with the Tourmyholiday agency. Overall experience was good.

Caption Zishan was a wonderful person having great management skills. He makes sure to keep everyone together. The trip with him was great and memorable.

There was a constant issue with seating throughout the trip due to uncomfortable back seats. This created some conflict among some of the members of the trip. But Zishan handled everything calmly.
Beyond the conflict, we all have fun and create good memories together.

Improvements we can have in the trip are:
Travel agencies should take care of cleanliness for the traveller and take proper precautions to ensure that all luggage is well-protected and covered during a rainy session.

This was my first trip with TourMyHoliday and also my first group tour in India. It turned out to be an amazing experience filled with unforgettable moments. We visited Devprayag Sangam, offered prayers at Dhara Devi Temple, and went on a thrilling trek to Chopta, Tungnath Mandir, and Chandrashila Peak Summit. We also visited Ukhimath Temple, soaking in its peaceful atmosphere. One of the most magical moments of the trip was at Deoria Tal, where the still waters reflected the towering mountains so beautifully that it felt unreal.

Amazing trip with our guide Zishan — very kind, calm, and made the trip fun and safe for everyone. Great memories, good vibes! Just one suggestion: please ask for a picture of the Tempo Traveller beforehand. The back seats were uncomfortable because extra seats were cramped for some travellers. Overall, loved it!❤️

I recently went on the Tungnath trek, and the beauty of the Tungnath Temple was truly breathtaking—so serene and majestic. The views throughout were beyond words. Right from the pickup point, the entire journey in the traveller, the stay, and the trekking experience were all made smooth and comfortable thanks to our wonderful captain, Mr. Zahid. His warm welcome and guidance turned the entire trip into a truly memorable and relaxing one...

This was my first solo trip, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Everything was spot on—the stay, the food, the views—but the real center of attraction was Captain Zishan.
    What a soul he is!
Supportive, calm, full of positive energy, and always making sure everyone felt safe and happy. He turned strangers into a family and made the entire journey feel special.
Forever grateful for this experience. If you're lucky enough to have Zishan as your captain, just know—you’re in good hands.
