Published on September 23, 2025 | Updated on September 08, 2026
A journey to Kedarnath and Tungnath combines pilgrimage, Himalayan trekking and some of Uttarakhand’s most impressive mountain landscapes. Both temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva and form part of the Panch Kedar circuit, but reaching them involves different routes and trekking conditions.
This Kedarnath Tungnath travel guide covers the route, suggested itinerary, trek distances, registration, best travel season and practical tips to help you plan both destinations in one trip.
Kedarnath and Tungnath at a Glance

Kedarnath is one of the Char Dham shrines and is reached by trekking from Gaurikund. Uttarakhand Tourism currently describes the Kedarnath approach as approximately 16–17 km from Gaurikund, depending on the official itinerary referenced.
Tungnath is one of the Panch Kedar temples and is reached from Chopta. The official Uttarakhand Tourism Chopta–Chandrashila itinerary lists the Chopta to Tungnath trail at about 3 km, followed by another 1.5 km to Chandrashila.
Kedarnath Tungnath Route
A practical route for travellers combining both destinations is:
Haridwar/Rishikesh → Guptkashi → Sonprayag → Gaurikund → Kedarnath → Gaurikund → Ukhimath/Chopta → Tungnath → Chandrashila
Travellers starting from Delhi can add the Delhi → Haridwar/Rishikesh section at the beginning and return through the same region.
If you want transport, accommodation and both treks arranged within one itinerary, see the Kedarnath Chopta Tour Package.
Suggested Kedarnath Tungnath Itinerary

Day 1: Haridwar/Rishikesh to Guptkashi
Travel towards Guptkashi through the mountain roads of Uttarakhand. Check into your accommodation and rest before the Kedarnath section of the journey.
Day 2: Guptkashi to Kedarnath
Travel towards Sonprayag and continue to Gaurikund according to current local transport arrangements.
From Gaurikund, begin the Kedarnath trek. The route involves a long uphill journey, so start early and maintain a comfortable pace.
After reaching Kedarnath, complete darshan and stay overnight if your itinerary allows.
Day 3: Kedarnath to Gaurikund and Chopta Region
After morning darshan, trek back towards Gaurikund.
Continue by road towards Ukhimath, Sari Village or Chopta, depending on your accommodation plan.
This transition day can be tiring, so avoid adding unnecessary sightseeing.
Day 4: Chopta to Tungnath and Chandrashila
Start early from Chopta and trek approximately 3 km to Tungnath Temple. Travellers with sufficient fitness and favourable weather can continue another 1.5 km towards Chandrashila. Uttarakhand Tourism categorises the wider Chopta–Chandrashila trekking experience as easy to moderate, although actual difficulty depends on weather, snow and individual fitness.
Return to Chopta after completing the trek.
Day 5: Return Journey
Begin your journey towards Rishikesh, Haridwar or Delhi depending on your final destination.
Kedarnath vs Tungnath Trek Difficulty
| Factor | Kedarnath | Tungnath |
|---|---|---|
| Starting Point | Gaurikund | Chopta |
| Approx. Trek | 16–17 km | About 3 km |
| Further Trek | — | 1.5 km to Chandrashila |
| Typical Challenge | Long distance & altitude | Steeper but shorter |
| Best For | Pilgrimage + trekking | Pilgrimage + mountain views |
The two treks should not be treated as equivalent. Kedarnath requires considerably more endurance because of the longer approach, while Tungnath is shorter but can become difficult during snow or poor weather.

Best Time to Visit Kedarnath and Tungnath
For most pilgrims and trekkers, May–June and September–October are commonly preferred periods because the temple region is accessible and conditions are generally more suitable for mountain travel.
Monsoon travel requires additional caution because heavy rainfall can affect Himalayan roads and trekking routes.
Winter conditions around Chopta and Tungnath can involve significant snow, while Kedarnath Temple remains seasonally closed.
