What is Char Dham Yatra?

 It is a spiritual circuit that involves visiting four holy shrines

Yamunotri: It is dedicated to the goddess Yamuna, marking the source of the Yamuna River,  the second sacred river in Hinduism. It symbolizes spiritual purification. It is believed that bathing in the river protects devotees from untimely death.

Gangotri: It is the birthplace of the holy Ganga River, the site dedicated to the goddess Ganga. It is believed to wash away the past sins of devotees and purify their souls.

Kedarnath: It is dedicated to Lord Shiva, It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and an important shrine of the Panch Kedar. Signifies as the site of renunciation and the strength of devotion.
Badrinath: sacred abode of Lord Vishnu, part of Panch Badri and 108 Divya Desam. It is the final destination of a sacred journey, representing spiritual fulfillment and salvation.

For millions of devotees, this arduous journey through high-altitude terrain has become a spiritual life goal for several reasons, such as spiritual purification, attainment of Moksha, and Self-discovery. 

Char Dham Yatra Route & Map

Traditionally, the journey is completed in a clockwise direction, starting from the west (Yamunotri) to the north (Badrinath), passing through the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. It usually begins from Haridwar, Rishikesh, or Dehradun, aiding in spiritual purification and altitude acclimatization.

Best Time To Visit Char Dham 

Before planning the Char Dham Yatra, it is important to check the weather and temperature conditions. Weather largely determines road accessibility and travel safety in the Himalayan region. 

Ideal months to visit

The summer season (May to June) and autumn months (September to October) due to safer travel conditions, pleasant weather, and clear mountain views. 

Avoidable Time

Monsoon months (July-August): not safe due to heavy rain, landslides, and roadblocks.

Winter months (Nov to April): Closing period due to harsh weather and heavy snowfall.

How To Reach Char Dham

All the char dham temples are accessible by air, train, and road, but there is no direct air or train connectivity to the temple; the final stretch requires a road and trekking journey. 

Here is a brief overview of each temple:

Nearest Airport: The Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the nearest airport to all char dham temples, and it also has great connectivity to all major cities of India. From the airport, you need to complete your journey by road via bus or taxi to each temple.

Rail Connectivity: Hardiwar, Rishikesh, and Dehradun are the nearest railheads to Char Dham, which connects to all the cities of India. From there, you can easily hire a taxi or bus to reach the temple. 

Haridwar to Yamunotri 

To reach Yamunotri, drive from Haridwar/Rishikesh to Janki Chatti, approx. 230 km, takes almost 8-9 hours. 

Final Stretch: From Janki Chatti, head on a 6 km uphill trek. Ponies and palkis are available to avoid trekking and reaching the temple. 

Yamunotri To  Gangotri

Gangotri is one of the most accessible dham in Char Dham. Uttarkashi is a main base point for Gangotri. To reach Gangotri, take a taxi or bus from Barkot. It is approximately 230 km from Yamunotri, and takes almost 9-10 hours. 

Gangotri to  Kedarnath

Firstly, drive to Gaurikund, which is approximately 220 km from Gangotri, taking almost 8-9 hours. 

Final stretch: From Gaurikund, the road journey ends, and a challenging trek journey starts, which you can cover on foot or by hiring a pony and palki. 

Registration Process for Char Dham Yatra

Char Dham registration is mandatory for all pilgrims who plan to visit Char Dham. It can be completed via the official government portal of the Uttarakhand Tourism Portal. 

Is Char Dham Yatra registration mandatory?

Yes, Char Dham yatra registration is compulsory for all. Whether you are Indian or foreign, without registration, Pilgrims are not permitted to proceed without registration  beyond Haridwar or Rishikesh. 

Method of registration

 Registration can be done online and offline.

Online Registration process: Online registration is done through the official portal of the Uttarakhand tourist care portal. 

Offline Registration Process: Offline registration can be done at the offline registration designated counters through filling a physical registration form and biometric verification. 

Documents Required For Char Dham Yatra 

• A valid Photo ID proof (generally Aadhar card for Indians or Passport for foreigners)
• An active mobile or email for verification. 

Char Dham Opening - Closing Date 2026

Based on the past few years' pilgrimage season observation, the Char Dham Yatra 2026 is tentatively scheduled to begin on 19 April 2026, Akshay Tritya (an auspicious day for the beginning of the sacred journey), and close in October/November around Bhai Dooj. 

Yamunotri Opening & Closing Date 2026: Yamunotri is scheduled to be open on 19 April 2026 ( on Akshay Tritya) and closed on 11 November 2026/)

Gangotri Opening & Closing Date 2026: Gangotri is also scheduled to be open and closed on the same day as Yamunotri. 

Kedarnath Opening & Closing Date 2026:  The Kedarnath opening date 2026 has not been announced yet; most probably it will be announced on Mahashivratri. Tentatively, the temple is scheduled to be open on 22 April 2026.

Kedarnath Closing date: The tentative closing date is 11 November 2026.

Badrinath Opening & Closing date 2026: Badrinath temple is scheduled to be open on 23 April 2026, announced on Basant Panchami. It closes on 13 November 2026(not announced yet)
