Sari Village – The Real Gateway to Deoria Tal & the Hidden Heart of Garhwal (2025)
Sari is not just a “trek starting point”.
It is a 600-year-old Bugyali village where every stone house has a story, where the women still sing the same harvest songs their grandmothers did, and where the mountains feel close enough to touch.
This is the complete story of the village that guards Deoria Tal.
Exact Location & How to Reach (2025)
District: Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand
Altitude: 2,000 m (6,600 ft)

– Delhi → 430 km

Sari is the last motorable village before the 2.5 km trek to Deoria Tal.
The Legend: Why the Village is Called “Sari” (सरि)
Two beautiful stories:
The Pandavas’ Sarai (Resting Place)
During their exile, the Pandavas spent a night here on the way to heaven (Swargarohini). Draupadi was so tired that she said “Sar-i” (Kumaoni/Garhwali for “my head is spinning”). The name stuck as “Sari”.
The Lost Necklace of Goddess Parvati
When Shiva and Parvati were returning from Madmaheshwar, Parvati’s golden necklace (सारी/हार) broke and fell here. The village was named “Sari” after the scattered beads. Even today, villagers sometimes find tiny glass-like beads in the fields and believe they are fragments of that divine necklace.
The Second Story: The Village That Refused to Die
In the 1970s–80s, Sari almost became a ghost village. Young men migrated to cities, houses collapsed, and only 15–20 families remained.
Then came Deoria Tal tourism in the late 1990s. The villagers made a historic decision:
“No outsider can open a hotel or camp here. Only Sari families will run homestays and guide trekkers.”
Today, 90% of the 150+ houses run homestays, camps, and dhabas — all owned by original villagers. Sari is now one of the richest and most successful self-sustained tourism villages in Uttarakhand.
The Hidden Secret: The Ancient Shiva Temple & the Invisible Lingam
At the highest point of the village stands a 900-year-old wooden Shiva temple (locally called “Shiva Mandir” or “Nag Devta”).
The lingam inside is invisible — covered completely by centuries of ghee and butter offerings. Only on Mahashivratri is a small hole made in the ghee mountain to pour water. The rest of the year, you just see a shining yellow mound.
Villagers say that if the ghee ever finishes, the village will face a great calamity.

Welcome home.
